I obtained a new LERG in February 2023. Through combing the data, once again we have some more consolidation of central offices (see the major consolidation in August 2021 below). The total number of COs reduced by 68, but on the site itself we lost 17. So not too bad in two years. Obviously the number of COs will continue to decrease, but when we get a LERG we'll update the database accordingly. So new total numbers of all COs out there in the US is 18,840 and for Canada is 3206, for a total for US/Canada of 22,046

Even though I haven’t updated the site very much in August, I’ve still been very busy behind the scenes. In January 2021 I obtained a new Local Exchange Routing Guide (LERG) to help with my central office research. However, there have been many updates since the original one I had from 2013. Many telcos are no longer reporting their smaller switches (mostly remotes and remote digital nodes). Hence that that has reduced the actual amount of central offices to find pictures for. In fact the overall database lost around 1600 central offices, at least on paper. The actual amount of actual central offices lost was probably less than a dozen (mostly due to consolidation), but this is how they now report to iConnectiv these days. My guess is that telcos have to pay to report and this is solely a cost saving measure. So in any regard the amount of central offices in the US went way down (from around 20,000 to 18,500). On the pages, I still list the central offices and keep the original pictures even though they’ve been “deprecated” in the database. The worst offenders are North Dakota and South Dakota. But I finally took the time to determine which offices were deprecated and which remained. So now the pages reflect this. Deprecated ones are now shown in blue with a “was” next to the original CLLI code. But in the grand scheme of things, we are now about 33% complete and continuing to work on the site. And again, any contributions are more than welcome!

As many of you know, there are a number of wildfires in northern California right now. There is rumor that the central office building in Greenville, CA in Area Code 530 was burned to the ground. I did a screen grab from Bing Maps and put it on the site. Hopefully this CO survived.

I did the research with the central office realignment between 2013 and 2021 for Louisiana. Sadly we lost 17 central offices due to the realignment. So that takes us down from 300 for 283 for Louisiana. As before, I am not removing any photos, just marking them in blue instead of black, and putting a "was" before the last known CLLI code.

Did a fair amount of work on South Dakota (Area Code 605). With the new system, the amount of central offices went down from 237 to 98. That resulted with a net deprecation of four central offices. But we also gained some in the process for a grand total of 37. Some older pictures were refreshed. Also did some photo refreshing and additional photos for Area Code 425 in Washington state.

Oh Canada! Oh British Columbia! I finally was able to make progress on Canada for the first time in forever. Worked on both Area Codes 604 and 250. For both area codes, I focused on the main switches and not the remotes. Some of these switches are very hard to located using GSV since they are quite remote.

Someone sent me an E-mail saying that my Salt Lake City Main picture was old. (Heck, there are a lot of old pictures on the site.) But that led me to update Utah this week. So I updated as much of Area Codes 435 and 801 as I could. Like Arizona, there was a decrease in the number of actual central offices due to deprecation. We lost 10 in Area Code 435. However, we did have an overall gain of pictures for both area codes. So for the most part, Utah is now complete for the foreseeable future.

Extensive work was done for Arizona listings for the first time in the better part of 10 years. A number of photos of CenturyLink buildings still showed the old Qwest logo. Area Codes 480, 602, and 623 have had most of their photos refreshed. Area Codes 520 and 928 have had selected CenturyLink photos refreshed.

It's obvious that the idea of a consolidation for softswitch nodes is common across the United States. I went through all of Arizona (which for the most part has been complete for several years) and based upon the changes in terminology and reporting, a number of central offices that used to have unique CLLI codes in Area Codes 520 and 928 no longer do, and have been deprecated to digital nodes. Therefore these are no longer "active" as far as the list is concerned. The pictures will remain, but the ratecenters will be listed in blue, and the former CLLI codes will say "was" in front of them. In 520, we lost 8 central offices, and in 928 we lost 9, for a grand total of 17. Even though this reduces our overall count by a few, this also reduces the amount of central offices total.

Remember what I said about North Dakota? (see below.) Kansas is pretty much the same way. I assume that a lot of small mom-and-pop telcos have done the same thing. But now Kansas is in good shape picture wise. Area Codes 913 and 816 are mostly complete, while Area Codes 620 and 785 hit on the larger places.

Another challenge was North Dakota (701). You'd think it would be rather easy, but it isn't. It's mostly a bunch of small independents, but they are more advanced than the the big boys and moved on to softswitches. But in doing so, the small communities that used to have remote switches are just now nodes that no longer have their own identity or unique CLLI code. So they are just swallowed up by the main switch that serves the small independent. In the end I managed to get a few, but not as many as I would have liked because of all the consolidation. So major towns are represented here now, but it will be difficult for non CenturyLink areas since these places no longer have CLLI codes.

You think you're done, and when you go back and check and see later that you're not. Not only that, but you made a lot of mistakes along the way. But the last time I worked on Maryland was in 2011, nearly 10 years go as I write this. A lot has changed since then, and a lot of places that weren't on GSV now are. And now GSV uses a lot better resolution for their photos than they did back in 2011. So I overhauled both area codes 301 and 410 for Maryland with as many new pictures as I could, and added quite a few in the process. So hopefully Maryland is as done as it is going to get for several years to come and is mostly complete.

We are doing a lot of work behind the scenes. Our databases haven't been kept up to date, so we updated them and fixed a few things behind the scenes. Things aren't perfect but for the most part are in a lot better shape then they've been in a while. So now we can get back to adding more Telephone Central Office Building Pictures.
