State by State Report for

Telephone Central Office Building Pictures

This is a State by State report of where things are at for picture collection at the Telephone Central Office Buildings website.

We still need volunteers! Please help!

Overall for US/Canada

The site has been around since 2005 and during that time I've been working hard. But it seems that there is so much more to do. I took a hiatus from 2018 to 2020, and again from 2022 to 2023, hoping to find a new method for the site (WordPress). But that didn't happen and I decided to press on with the old format from so many years ago. In 2020 I started again and did some major fixing and remodeling, continuing into early 2021, and again in early 2023. COVID was good for something, right? (grin)

United States

Overall: Overall for the whole United States is in pretty good shape. All states have at least one central office photo, all Area Codes have a least one central office, and most have multiple photos. A number states are complete, but there are an equal number of states that are barely touched or haven't been touched in years. So in other words, lots of work (and rework) to do.

Alabama

Alabama has only a few so far. Needs work. Worked a bit on Area Code 205 in early 2023, but overall the state needs work.

Alaska

Alaska has a few, and the pictures are dated. Needs work.

Arizona

Arizona for the most part is complete thanks to the work of volunteer contributors, but the pictures are over 10 years old for the most part. Most of this state is in need of photo refresh, especially in former Qwest (now CenturyLink) areas. In Area Codes 520 and 928, some central offices have been descoped/deprecated due to the implementation of packet softswitches. The photos will remain and their old CLLI codes will be listed. However these pictures will not be counted towards the total anymore.

Arkansas

Some good representation, but the photos are at least 10 years old. This could some some completeness and some retakes.

California

The parts around San Diego are pretty much complete (mostly around 2007-2010 timeframe) and GSV refreshed as of May 2021. The rest of the state is in pretty good shape in urban areas, though rural areas need work. A lot of work was done on this state in 2020 and again in 2021.

Colorado

Decent representation, but this could use a lot of work.

Connecticut

Mostly complete as of 2017. May revisit the site in a couple of years to replace aging GSV photos.

Delaware

Mostly complete as of 2020. This state should be in good shape for a while.

District of Columbia (Washington, DC)

Complete, and photos refreshed as of April 2021.

Florida

Florida overall is in pretty good shape. A lot of work was done in 2020 and again in early 2021 to refresh the photos in Area Codes 813 and 727.

Georgia

The area around Atlanta (Area Codes 404/770/470/678) are mostly complete. The rest of the state needs a good amount of work.

Hawaii

Mostly complete as of 2020. Should be in good shape for a while.

Idaho

Listings for major cities completed in 2020. Needs to eventually go back and fill in small towns.

Illinois

Places like Chicago are in pretty good shape, but overall the state has a lot of holes that needs to be filled. Some Area Codes are good, some need work.

Indiana

Indiana was worked on in 2020 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

Iowa

Iowa was worked on in 2020 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

Kansas

As of March 2021, both Area Codes 316 and 913 are mostly complete. Area Codes 620 and 785 have major areas covered. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

Kentucky

Kentucky was worked on in 2020 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

Louisiana

Originally the state was covered in great detail by the late Mark Cuccia circa 2005 and 2006 using an early generation low-resolution cell phone camera. I've been updating the entire state using GSV to update the pictures. That was complete in February 2023 with the completion of the redo of Area Code 337.

Maine

For the most part, Maine is complete as of 2017. Need to revisit in a few years to replace aging GSV photos.

Maryland

Extensive remodeling of both Area Code 301 and 410 pages took place in February 2021. For the most part Maryland is complete.

Massachusetts

For the most part, Massachusetts is complete as of 2017. Need to revisit in a few years to replace aging GSV photos.

Michigan

Michigan needs work. All Area Codes are accounted for, but outside of metro Detroit it's spotty.

Minnesota

Metro Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) is complete as of 2017, but the rest of the state needs work.

Mississippi

Only a small portion of the state has been worked on. Area Code 662 was updated to hit major cities in February 2021. The rest of the state needs work.

Missouri

This had quite a bit of help from a volunteer in the 2010 timeframe, but the photos are roughly 10 years old. Need some retakes and fill in the gaps.

Montana

Montana was worked on in 2020 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

Nebraska

Nebraska was worked on in 2020 and again in 2023 to hit the major cities and later most of the county seats. Probably done for now.

Nevada

Nevada has some pictures from contributions and some from GSV. The older TCO pictures have been refreshed with new GSV ones in February 2021. However more work needs to be done to hit smaller towns.

New Hampshire

For the most part, New Hampshire is complete as of 2017. Need to revisit in a few years to replace aging GSV photos.

New Jersey

New Jersey is mostly complete. Area Code 856 with parts of 609 were taken over the course of several years, filled in with GSV pictures. For the most part this is complete as of 2020.

New Mexico

Pictures for New Mexico are mostly from volunteer contributors. Far from finished, but a good start. However, some pictures are approaching 10 years old and need to be refreshed.

New York

Downstate New York (NYC & Long Island) is mostly complete as of April 2021, but upstate is lacking. Need to go back and fill in the rural parts of New York state.

North Carolina

Eastern parts of the state borrow from Telebeans. Most of the rest of the state is pretty sparse. Needs a lot of work.

North Dakota

This state is very difficult because it contains mostly small independents that have for the most part transitioned away from TDM switching to softswitches/packet switches. In doing so, they descoped their former remotes and removed their identity and their CLLI codes. So now all the prefixes are now listed under one switch and one CLLI code for an entire company. That reduces the number of actual central offices to list since they're no longer in official documentation. I did some research in February 2021 and the 701 page now reflects this, but it's still something I'd like to go back and work on at a later date.

Ohio

Ohio was worked on in 2020 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

Oklahoma

Only a small portion of the state is covered, mostly from volunteer contributions. Needs work.

Oregon

Pictures that were borrowed from TCO have been mostly refreshed with GSV pictures in February 2021. Still needs work to fill in a lot of gaps statewide.

Pennsylvania

Mostly complete for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, major towns for most of the rest of the state. Some older GSV photos needs to be refreshed due to age.

Rhode Island

Mostly complete as of 2017. Need to revisit in a few years to replace aging GSV photos.

South Carolina

Extensively worked on in 2020. Area Code 803 mostly complete, 843 and 864 hit on major cities. For the most part in pretty good shape.

South Dakota

A combination of user contributions and from GSV, covering some of the high points. With the new consolidation system, about 1/3 of the COs are now accounted for.

Tennessee

Mostly from volunteer contributions. Needs work.

Texas

Mostly from volunteer contributions. Some areas better than others. Needs work.

Utah

About one-third came from volunteers, the other two-thirds from either GSV or TCO. Mostly complete as of April 2021.

Vermont

For the most part, Vermont is complete as of 2017. Need to revisit in a few years to replace aging GSV photos.

Virginia

Virginia for the most part has been close to complete for a while. Area Code 276 was refreshed in April 2021 as much as possible with a few new ones added. Work to do: Refresh the old GSV and Telebeans pictures as much as possible.

Washington

A lot from volunteers, especially in Area Code 509, otherwise GSV photos. Good representation in most area codes now with GSV. Could use some work for rural areas.

West Virginia

West Virginia was worked on in 2017 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns

Wisconsin

Mostly from volunteer contributions. But some of these are over 10 years old and need to be refreshed.

Wyoming

Wyoming was worked on in 2020 to hit major cities. Need to eventually go back and get small towns.

American Samoa/Guam/Northern Marianas Islands

These are very remote places in the Pacific Ocean. GSV has been to Guam and I have one picture from there.

Puerto Rico

GSV has been to PR and I have a few pictures from there.

US Virgin Islands

GSV has been to USVI and I have a few pictures from there.

Canada

Overall: Overall Canada needs a lot of help. But then again, a lot of central offices are well off the beaten path. So getting pictures from Canada will be difficult overall. I could use some volunteers!

Alberta

A couple, and I even took one!

British Columbia

The Vancouver area (Area Code 604) is mostly complete. Area Code 250 (rest of the province) has fair representation.

Manitoba

Only one so far.

New Brunswick

Only two so far.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Only two so far.

Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut

A few, but this will be the most challenging of all the areas since most of these are very, very remote!

Ontario

A handful so far.

Prince Edward Island

Only one so far.

Quebec

One for each Area Code and that's it.

Saskatchewan

Only one so far. This one will be tough. Most central offices are very remote remotes.
